Arcata School District-A One-of-a-Kind Learning Community!!
Arcata School District, located in the city of Arcata in Humboldt County, on the northern coast of California, is a K-8 district comprised of two schools, Arcata Elementary School and Sunny Brae Middle School. Our total enrollment for 2010-2011 is approximately 514 students. We are small enough to maintain close relationships with our students and parents and big enough to offer a wide array of fabulous programs and courses which appeal to our school community's desire for unique academic and extra-curricular offerings.

At Arcata Elementary, students are involved in a Global Studies and Arts Curriculum. The people and cultural traditions of different continents are introduced at each grade level. Students engage in intriguing activities related to the continents, ranging from culinary traditions to clothing preferences to local customs to regional music and art. The culminating activity for the Global Studies Program is the fabulous Global Fair, held at the end of each school year for the enjoyment of students and parents alike.

Instruction in the visual and performing arts is provided by local artists and musicians to our elementary students, instilling in them a solid foundation in the arts which they can carry with them for a lifetime. Third Graders learn to play steel pan drums while Fourth Graders learn to play the violin. Fifth Graders participate in band. All students are involved in drama instruction and stage productions.

Students in fourth and fifth grades acquire computer skills, such as keyboarding, basic word processing and the ability to create PowerPoint presentations. In addition to these curricular offerings, students at Arcata Elementary School participate in multiple exciting field trips which are directly related to their academic coursework. A strong P.E. program is provided to all students and Second Graders all take swimming lessons.

The acquisition of academic skills is woven seamlessly into our unique program, creating students who are lifelong learners with a love for school and the sense that they are an important and cherished part of the learning process and the school family.

Parents are an integral part of our school family. They are encouraged and invited to serve as volunteers in our classrooms from helping out with various activities to reading one-on-one or with small groups of children. In addition, we have a strong P.T.O. which organizes various fundraisers, such as R.A.D. (Raffle, Art & Dessert). They also sponsor the Family Science Night.

All of these learning opportunities prepare our children for entry into Sunny Brae's middle school environment as they advance to the sixth grade.

When students enter Sunny Brae Middle School, designated a California Distinguished School, they are exposed to a whole new world of exciting educational and extra-curricular opportunities. Sunny Brae is one of only three true middle schools in Humboldt County. The modified departmentalized schedule in sixth grade and fully departmentalized schedule in seventh and eighth grades help them eventually transition smoothly into a high school setting.

A strong character education program called Second Step ensures that all students receive a firm foundation in character enhancement and growth as they mature into young adults. In addition, a caring and supportive staff ensure that emotional and social needs of our students are met as they journey through their middle school years.

At Sunny Brae, you will find a comprehensive extra-curricular program that rivals some of the best in the country and academic offerings that are superb.

An Accelerated Math Track is offered, as well as geometry and Algebra II. Math Counts is another feature in the Math Department. Literature is a course offering in the Language Arts Department. For students wishing to acquire foreign language skills, Spanish is offered.

In the extra-curricular realm, there is something for everyone! Some of the offered courses are:
