Bastian, sweeper on McKinleyville's second consecutive Humboldt-Del Norte
League boys soccer championship team, led a group of five Panthers named All-HDNL.
Eureka placed four players on the All-County team while Arcata and St. Bernard
had three each.
Arcata's girls soccer team went through the regular season undefeated and
untied, and Kuteira, a junior center midfielder, was named the HDNL's Most
Valuable Player by the league coaches.
The Tiger star beat out some stiff competition from teammates Lindsay Jones
and Ashley Johnson. Jones racked up a record-breaking 31 goals and five hat
tricks at the senior's forward spot, and Johnson, a junior, was outstanding in
center midfield with a team-leading 16 assists while scoring 15 goals herself.
Eureka and St. Bernard each placed four girls on the all-league squad, and
South Fork had three.
In volleyball, Del Norte's Jessica Murray corralled the MVP honors in the Big
5 Conference, as one of three Warriors earmarked for first-team honors. Eureka,
which tied Del Norte for first place, also put three players on the Big 5 squad
with Arcata and McKinleyville posting two each.
In Little Five Conference volleyball, champion South Fork's Raina Parrott
shared MVP with second-place South Fork's Tonya Early.
Joining DN's Murray on the Big 5 honor list are Kristin Murray and Sonya
Reynolds while Eureka landed Andrea Townsend, Mary Carter and Connie Radford.
Other Big 5 honorees: Linsey Payne and Michelle Laurendeau of Arcata,
McKinleyville's Lindsey Iorg and Kali Wunner; Fortuna's Joanna Nieto.
In boys soccer, Sebastian was joined on the elite all-league team by Mack
teammates midfielders Sean Heyne and Trevor Kates, junior goalkeeper Andrew
Suchanek and senior forward Chandler Seward.
Eureka's all-county brigade includes forward Steamer Nelson, defenders Zach
Woodward and Granite Calimpong and midfielder Justin Gyenis, all seniors.
Forward Lance Pimentel, defender Daniel La Bolle and forward Josh Ingram were
Arcata's senior all-league trio, with St. Bernard putting David Naylor, Brian
Ayala and Jonathan Glen on the squad. Only Ayala, a junior, is an underclassman.
Del Norte's James Standring and Raul Alanis, Fortuna's Kenny Edwards and
South Fork's Daniel Constable round out the team.
In girls soccer, the perfect-record of the champion Tigers weighed heavily
with league coaches. Besides Kuteira, Jones and Johnson, other Tigers selected
were junior defender Allison Adams and senior goalkeeper Elise Tessler.
Eureka's quartet of all-county performers are sophomore midfielder Rachel
Grushkin, senior forward Arly Chambers, senior defender Amelia Sattler and
sophomore stopper Talia Mathias.
St. Bernard also had four chosen: defender Monica Schallert, stopper Alexis
Cade, sophomore leading scorer Lindsey Harpham and midfielder Krista Landing.
South Fork's all-senior trio: forward Chiara Chavez, midfielders Patti
Giallanzo and Dia Burkholder.
Rounding out the squad are Ferndale's Kyli Petersen, McKinleyville's Kelly
Sharum and Arti Rana; Fortuna's Cassie Holmgren and Del Norte's Amanda Kays.
