H-DNL
names All-League selections
Thursday,
December 18, 2003 Over on the boys side, meanwhile, junior Matt Colwell and
senior Ross Middlesmiss shared the award for Arcata, having orchestrated the
Tigers' championship run in the middle of the field.
"They're
two different players," Arcata boys coach John Ramos said of the dynamic
duo. "For us, Matt really attacked the goal and scored a lot, and we asked
Ross to hold the ball more and distribute. They were both playmakers."
In
volleyball, Lorenzi is the latest in a long line of MVP recipients for the Lady
Warriors.
Lorenzi
follows in the footsteps of former teammates Jessica and Kristin Murray, who
claimed the past three MVP awards in the Big Five for a program among the most
consistent in any local prep sport.
"She
has the best hands for setting in the league," said coach and mother Debbie
Lorenzi. "She hits wells, but what she does extremely well is setting the
ball. She has quick fingers, which makes us the fastest team in the
league."
Lorenzi, who
has two previous All-League selections in both volleyball and softball, joins
teammates Ashley Webster and Stephanie Freeman on the All-League team.
For Eureka,
which shared the league crown, Gina Sund, Talesa Bleything and Katelyn Guild all
made the grade, as did Arcata's Katie Abrahamsen and Julie Wright,
McKinleyville's Alex Iorg and Fortuna's Marissa Ehret.
In the
Little Five, Southern Trinity took the title with a perfect 8-0 record, paced by
senior Jackson.
Joining her
on the All-League team were teammates Marie Gaylord and Brittany Bowen, as well
as Ferndale's Alissa Sarvinski and Margaret Leonardi, St. Bernard's Nancy Davis
and Emily Irwin, Hoopa's Jena Marshall and South Fork's Saundra Paup.
On the
soccer fields, meanwhile, Bensky anchored an impressive Arcata defensive unit
with 15 shutouts on the season.
"She
had a huge impact on the outcome of many of our games," Arcata coach Jay
Stare said of his netminder, who allowed just 16 goals in 21 games, an
incredible return, especially for a sophomore.
Sutton, a
senior, shared the award after a standout season for the Loggers, who went
13-8-3 but failed to make the playoffs.
The
All-League team also included Arcata's Karen Camilli, Melissa Hassler, Maya
Johnson and Katie Shishido; Eureka's Becca Pilgrim and Elliot Owen; Fortuna's
Mackenzie Coleman and Molly Hopper; and Del Norte's Stephanie Hough and Goldie
Haddad.
For the
smaller schools, Bareilles turned in some stellar displays in the Crusaders'
playoff run, leading the team to a second North Coast Section championship.
Joining her
on the All-League team were teammates Alex Vallee, Alicia Naylor and Brittany
Vitale, as well as Ferndale's Crystal Ammons, Felicia Miranda and Haily Miranda,
and South Fork's Melanie Mathews and Amanda Coclainy.
