BERRIES
late May

We have these berries in the Arb. Not all ripen now, but many

are developing fruit. Salmonberry may have finished fruiting.

EDIBLE                         NOT EDIBLE

black huckleberry              twinberry
red huckleberry                bearberry
blackcap raspberry             snowberry
gooseberry                     red elderberry
thimbleberry                   osoberry
salmonberry                    coffeeberry
strawberry
red flowering currant
salal
Oregon grape

For the older students to find these in any reasonable

length of time you need to flag them beforehand as with

surveyor's tape.

These are not all proper, botanical berries, but they are

all small, fleshy fruits.

"Not edible" means it tastes bad or may be somewhat toxic.

NOTE: Positive identification of anything you eat from the wild is

critical for your continued good health; while not grown in

the Arb, the Arcata, California area hosts some deadly plants such

as the Poison Hemlock.

We did not plant blackberry in the Arb because it would take

over the whole place. As well as a native blackberry in

California, there is the introduced, very aggressive Himalaya blackberry.

It has thick stems and big thorns.
