SEED

In fall you can appreciate what all the flowers of spring turned into. Walk around looking for all the kinds of seed capsules, fruits, seed attachments, and seed pods that you can find. You can shake seeds out of the figwort, clarkia, and evening primrose capsules. You can blow seeds off the dandelion and dandelion-like false dandelion seed heads. Don't forget the grasses.
I asked the older classes to draw as many seed containers or seed attachments as they could. That wasn't a very successful assignment. More fun would be some destructive sampling to answer some seed questions: Do bigger capsules have more seeds? How much does the number of seeds/pod vary on one plant? Between plants? Do annuals produce more seeds than perennials?
