Josiah Gregg was an explorer and he rediscovered Humboldt Bay by land. L.K. Wood was one of the explorers in Gregg's party. Gregg came to Eureka to see if the Trinity River flowed into Humboldt Bay. He wanted to bring commodities up the river to the miners.

Gregg found the Mad River and the reason they call it the Mad River is because there wasan argument between Gregg and L.K. Wood.While they were exploring the land route other explorers were coming in by sea.The party split up.Wood went south and was mauled by a grizzly bear.Gregg died shortly there after.
