School Profile
Casterlin School serves an area of approximately sixty square miles. The K-8 students are transported to and from school on school buses. Students who miss the bus often have a difficult time getting to school.
In addition to rough, windy roads, transporting students to and from school is often hampered by relatively severe weather. Although snow is rarely a problem, we experience annual rainfall that varies from fifty to seventy inches. Some students living on the fringes of the school attendance area do live at higher elevations where snow becomes an issue. Staff who travel to work from the Garberville or Bridgeville areas have to pass over elevations where snow and ice can prevent them from arriving at work.
Local industires include logging, wood harvesting for firewood, animal husbandry - raising goats, cattle and sheep. A grocery store is located in Alderpoint. Many people are self-employed, drive out of the area for work, or live on some form of public assistance.
