With parents and community members watching, the Annual Humboldt County Spelling Bee is held in March at the Humboldt County Office of Education.

The Elementary Division has a one-word miss, oral competition. The students spell their way through words such as xenophobia, lissome, cessation, therapeutic and pseudonym. Two students travel to the San Joaquin County Office of Education in Stockton to the state competition in April.

The Junior High level is a written competition, 4 misses allowed. After successfully spelling words like chignon, mignonette, cicerone, ellipsis, and inchoate, two co-championst qualify for the state competition. The state competition is hosted by the Marin County Office of Education in San Rafael in May.
