Volunteer Firefighter Academy

2012 Volunteer Academy Flyer

This course provides instruction in basic concepts of firefighting 
equipment and operation, preparing
students for California State Fire 
Marshal Volunteer Firefighter certification. Course participants must
be 

affiliated with a volunteer or career fire department and have access to 
structural turnouts and SCBAs.

Certifications

Students successfully completing the Volunteer Firefighter Academy curriculum 
may be eligible to
receive one or more of the following certificates:

• California State Fire Marshal Volunteer Firefighter certification
• NWCG S-190 (Intro to Wildland Fire Behavior) 

• NWCG S-130 (Basic Wildland Firefighter) 

• I-100 (Incident to the Incident Command System) 

• NIMS-IS 700.a (NIMS - an Introduction)
• Emergency Medical Responder (40 hour) 

• CSTI Hazardous Materials First Responder Operations (16 hrs) 

• CSTI Hazardous Materials Decontamination (8 hrs) 

• FSTEP Confined Space Awareness (8 hrs) 

• FSTEP Auto Extrication (16 hrs)

Course Information

Academy classes begin on Tuesday, January 3, 2012. The BASIC portion of the Volunteer Academy
(128 hours) concludes approximately March 27, 2012. The ADVANCED (or certificated) portion of the
Volunteer Academy (104 hours) concludes approximately May 24, 2012. The course will be on some
Tuesdays (from 6:00 pm to 10:00 pm), most Saturdays (from 8:30 pm to 5:00 pm) and some Sundays
(from 8:30 am to 5:00 pm). Total Academy hours are approximately 232 hours.

Locations vary. First class will be at Arcata Fire HQ Station - 631 9th St.

Registration

Sign-up is first come, first served. Contact the Humboldt County Office of Education HROP Office at
707-445-7021 to register. Registration is limited to the first 32 students. Registration fee is $175.
Course textbook will be provided as soon as practical, due to required reading before the first class
session. Registration materials will be provided on the first day of class.

Students must provide evidence of an OSHA-5144 Respiratory Evaluation and SCBA Fit Test
Certification prior to the second day of class.

Prerequisites

All students must be affiliated with a volunteer or career fire department. Students MUST provide their
own structural turnouts and SCBA to participate in the course.


Outreach Courses

Upon request, HROP fire services instructors can instruct various courses to
Humboldt County Fire Agencies. Courses may be custom tailored by HROP
instructors to meet the needs of local fire department agencies. Upon
successful completion of a course, an HROP certificate of completion will be
provided to each student.

Currently the Humboldt County Fire Instructors Association, through
sponsorship with HROP, will offering S-130 in April 2012. S130 lecture
portion will be computer based training (on-line or by CD). The 8
hour skills portion will be done at 2 or 3 different locations. Fortuna and/or Blue
Lake and/or ??????.
