Welcome Union Street Charter Visitors
Hello, we hope that you find some of the information you seek on this website. The unique spirit of the people who make up our school community and the non-institutional feel of our building and campus cannot be approached in a brochure or website. Please plan on attending one of our intake meetings for interested parents. Feel free to call the director, John Schmidt, for any questions you have about the school. (707-822-4845 ext. 8#) Union Street Charter is a public charter school in the Arcata School District. We are a small school with about 90 students in grades K through 5. We foster high self-esteem while laying strong foundations in academics and the arts. We de-emphasize competition as motivation for learning and try to minimize "pop" culture as much as possible. Union Street Charter Network does not discriminate on the basis of race, religion, or national origin.
PhilosophyThe initial school years are crucial to a child's educational attitudes & future success in learning. Our teachers are committed to providing a nurturing environment and fostering high self-esteem & confidence. Our ultimate aim is to turn a child's natural curiosity & desire to explore into a lifelong love of learning. At Union Street Charter we believe in the unique value of each child, parent, and teacher - both as individuals and as a members of the school community. We offer a climate of warm caring, and mutual respect. We work together to create an environment which minimizes the pressures of popular culture and the use of academic competition as motivation. Union Street Charter's strengths are based on the belief that academic growth, a well-developed sense of self worth, and an eagerness to accept challenge, are essential to student success. Our beliefs underlie everything that we do. We strive constantly to be aware of the trust that parents place in us as we guide students toward a deeper understanding of themselves and the world around them. CurriculumUnion Street Charter School has a rich and diverse curriculum. We provide strong foundations in language arts, social studies, science, and math. The Union Street Charter curriculum emphasizes an interactive "hands on" approach to math and science. Our "reasoning based" curriculum involves students in observation, recording results, predicting outcomes, and forming conclusions. In language arts we recognize each student's natural desire to communicate and to create. Children gain fluency in reading and writing by applying their developing language arts skills in all the curriculum areas. Twice weekly classes devoted to art, Spanish, and music are taught by qualified and inspired special program teachers. Drama, camping, backpacking, cultural events, and computer literacy supplement the core curriculum during each school year. Why Choose Union Street Charter? You are joining a small, close knit community of active and involved parents and teachers who value education as a clear priority. Consequently, you will find a bridge between your family's educational values and your child's school experience. Your child will join a classroom of interested and excited learners. Your child will develop attitudes toward school and learning that will sustain him/her in future educational pursuits. You will be part of a school where your thoughts and feelings are respected and responded to. You will have a meaningful role in your child's education. Two programs that many students and parents appreciate are the extended daycare program and school snacks. The extended daycare program enables students to be on campus from 7:45 a.m. until 5:45 p.m. for a fee. Children are offered an optional morning snack and a snack in after school. The ECE bills parents each month for snacks and extended daycare fees based on actual individual usage. The Equinox Center for Education also acts as a PTO organization that raises funds for Union Street Charter programs and facility enhancement. Thank you for your time and interest. Please Call the school at 707-822-4845 ext. 8# for more information.
